Welcoming our 2025 work experience students to Farrer Kane & Co
With the school term now underway, many of us will be reflecting on the summer just gone. Here at Farrer Kane & Co that means looking back at some of the fantastic initiatives and campaigns we were involved with and helped get underway – a highlight being another year of our work experience programme.
Designed to give back to and enrich our local community, this year we welcomed Debbie and Sherin, two brilliant students from a local school who were keen to connect the dots between the worlds of politics, law, journalism and communication.
At the end of their first year of A-Levels, Debbie and Sherin took some time out of their usual classrooms and joined us in the office to spend two days in the PR industry. We built a schedule that didn’t just show them the ropes but also introduced them to the overall industry ecosystem, which is larger and more intricately patterned than many imagine.
When checking out careers, it can feel like choosing one industry means losing out on access to another. But one of the things we love about working in PR is that this isn’t the case for us – we blend together and work between specialisms, sectors and skillsets every day – sometimes even hourly. For Debbie and Sherin, this was an exciting discovery, giving them a glimpse into what’s out there for people passionate about more things than they can count on one hand.
By balancing teaching-in sessions where the team offered our perspectives and advice with proactive research, writing and practice pitching, Debbie and Sherin were learning and creating from the get-go, just as every new generation of PR professionals does.
With bright futures ahead of them, it was fantastic to hear that Debbie and Sherin’s brief first encounter with PR had given to them a new career path to consider. You can read what they had to say about their time with us below.
Sherin:
“Work experience at Farrer Kane & Co has been both eye-opening and motivating. I enjoyed my time with the team so much and, having got a real sense of what PR is like, my interest is piqued. I’m going to be finding every opportunity now to continue to contribute and learn about the PR industry”
Debbie:
“I learned a great deal about the PR industry and had such an enjoyable time with the team, who were so supportive and friendly. It means a lot that they dedicated their time to us, and I’m now really inspired to pursue a career in PR. I’d love to come back and do it all again!”
