Stress Awareness Month – our favourite ways to destress

As Stress Awareness Month (April) draws to a close, we wanted to remind ourselves of the importance of stepping back and doing the things that help us to de-stress.

Whether it’s a breath of fresh air in the park, catching up with friends, or diving into a new book, there is no shortage of ways to decompress; but with creativity a big part of agency life, our team often also embraces our creative side to mentally refresh.

Sadly, there is still a stigma surrounding mental health and stress, making it more important than ever that we talk about our problems and share techniques that can help us all feel happier, healthier, and less stressed.

As The Stress Awareness Society points out, manageable positive changes can lead to improvements in stress management and overall mental health over time. So, we thought it might be helpful for the team to share some of our preferred ways of managing our stress levels:

Fresh Air:

It might sound simple but just taking a break and getting outside for some fresh air can be really helpful: whether that is a gentle walk in the park; an outdoor swim at the local lido; or a countryside bike ride – a breath of fresh air and some sunshine can make a big difference.

Changing Routines:

Starting something new can give a new perspective and help to reduce stress. It doesn’t have to be as drastic as learning a new skill (although it can be!), starting a new book or even a new TV programme can help you refocus and reduce stress.

Making time for people:

Sometimes it’s easy to feel like you’re by yourself with your stress, so finding time to speak with friends and family is a great way to combat this: meeting up with friends, going to a pub quiz with your colleagues, or giving family a call can all you destress- after all, a problem shared is a problem halved!

Finding harmony:

Sitting back and listening to a favourite piece of music can do the world of good; or, for the more gifted amongst us, relaxing by playing an instrument has been shown to reduce stress levels.

Cooking up a storm:

Cooking yourself a fancy meal can help you feel better. Perhaps try finding a recipe you like the look of online, or trying your hand at – attempting new things in the kitchen can be a great stress-reliever.

While these are some of our favourites, each person will have their own personal ways to destress. To find out about more ways to manage stress and some of the resources that are available to help, do take a look the Stress Awareness Society.
